Following an evening at a 1975 disco, Kitty Pryde and Betsy Braddock step away from their duty of protecting Jean Grey and contemplate whether their actions in the past can actually change what’s to come.

It’s only on the train ride back to Westchester, and once Jean and Ororo have drifted off to sleep leaning on each other, that Kitty finally feels comfortable enough to speak up.

«Let me quickly summarize,» she says, barely above a whisper. «We’re both single — no boyfriend, girlfriend, or anyone exciting waiting to dance with us. We likely don’t have jobs either. I don’t know about RCX, but Emma Frost doesn’t react well when her people take unauthorized time off. Oh, and you have a brother, and maybe you enjoy happy hours and remembering your childhood pet-«

«No, we don’t,» Betsy replies softly. «I love my brother, naturally. However, he’s very focused on being a dad, a husband, and a national hero-all of that takes up a lot of his time. With his responsibilities and my work at the agency, there’s hardly any time for family meals.»

Honestly, it’s been ages since I’ve been back to Deerfield for Hanukkah. I really don’t think my parents even bother hoping I’ll call them back — they get a call from me twice a year, and it’s usually just them complaining about each other, even though they’ve been divorced for ten years! » I’m just kind of playing with the fringe on this purse I borrowed. «Betsy… I mean, whatever we’re doing here with Jean, do you *really* think we can actually turn our lives around? Or even, like, fix everything in the world?»

Betsy pauses, thinking it over. «It’s impossible to know how much one person’s life can affect everything, but the impact could be huge — even bigger than we realize. Perhaps a future that includes Jean means the X-Men still thrive, and Charles Xavier’s vision becomes a reality.»

Mutants and Homo sapiens coexisting peacefully in the world. It sounds good… but is it realistic? She attempts to picture it… or, more accurately, to recall a hope she used to express as a teenager, a hope she’s since forgotten. A world free from informational pamphlets like Know the Signs: How to Spot the Mutant Menace in Your School, City, or Household. A world without news reports constantly detailing the capture or deaths of mutants, tracked by an overly excited news anchor using a marker on a large whiteboard. A world where a thirteen-year-old Kitty Pryde wouldn’t wake up from nightmares about Sentinels attacking Miss Hester’s school, smashing through her window with a giant metal fist and pulling her from bed, leaving her too scared to use her phasing ability. Perhaps in that world, she would have confided in her parents about who she truly was. Maybe she’d have more people she could trust and share her secret with-favorite teachers, partners, or close friends.

Kitty, I’ve been thinking about something. Since we traveled back in time, have you experienced any of your… well, your moments of disorientation-your slips, I mean? You haven’t said anything about them, so I was curious.

«No,» she realizes as the words leave her mouth. She turns to look out the window, but all she sees is her own clear reflection on the rain-streaked glass. It’s odd. She used to fear the slips and what they implied about her-that she was an even bigger outcast than those who hated mutants would imagine. But it wasn’t just that. She was frightened by how she felt *after* the slips. Sometimes, she longed to remain in the world that she thought was a result of her mind slowly unraveling. There were times she would have given anything, absolutely everything, to be the person she was in that other, more pleasant world. «Don’t you think that means something?» Kitty asks.

She can’t discern what Betsy thinks of her admission without looking at her. And for a while, Betsy remains silent.

Finally she begins, «I do. Kitty, if we—»

Jean suddenly sits up, surprising Ororo and making both her and Betsy jump. «The professor,» Jean says, her voice still groggy, «says we have a visitor back at the mansion. It’s not a mutant. She’s looking for me and claims to be a friend.»

Kitty notices Betsy stiffen next to her, and she feels it too. Is this the danger they’ve been preparing for? Should they tell her what’s happening now? Or just act and deal with the consequences, like stepping on that butterfly? Betsy’s leg won’t stop jiggling with anxiety. This might be the moment they’ve been waiting for — the entire purpose of their mission. This could be it.

And their only reason for staying.

Betsy shakes her head slightly. It seems we can’t prevent them from going back to the mansion. Perhaps this is the most favorable outcome we could have asked for — we received an early warning, and the mansion is now on alert. We simply need to prepare for whatever happens next.

The four friends hail a yellow taxi at the train station, and while Jean stays in touch with Xavier telepathically to monitor the situation, Kitty is glad to find the mansion calm when they arrive. The only unusual thing is a light on in Xavier’s office late at night. When they enter, the mansion isn’t buzzing with activity-there are no sounds of anyone running upstairs, and no voices coming from the office as they get closer. The professor appears perfectly fine, sitting calmly at his desk. Behind him, Scott is leaning against a bookshelf, wearing giant red-lensed aviator sunglasses, a T-shirt, sweatpants, and plaid slippers-definitely not ready for a fight.

«Welcome back, the four of you,» Xavier said with a smile. «Our visitor mentioned she wanted to talk to you, Jean, and we decided it was best to hold off until everyone was here.»

The visitor was a young woman, roughly the same age, with dark, messy curls coated in dust. She wore ripped black jeans-torn badly at both knees-and a wet denim jacket featuring red and white stripes on the shoulders and star-shaped patches on the sleeves. She clearly possesses significant power, considering she was able to confront a strong telepath like Jean Grey.

But as the woman turns her large brown eyes on Jean, she looks nothing but relieved.

«America Chavez,» she says, introducing herself. «I’ve been searching for-» Her eyes then fall on them, and she seems a little surprised before she tilts her head and clenches her jaw. «I wasn’t expecting to see you two here.»
